Grant Update Ms. Jeannie Rosenthal reported that for the fiscal year 2004-2005 GBC has been awarded $1,116,773.65 in grant funding. We are waiting for notification on the DOE Energy Efficiency grant for $150,000 to use towards an Industrial Energy Efficiency degree program with TMCC, WNCC, and CCSN. She requested permission to pursue a PACE Coalition entitled Challenging College Alcohol Abuse. PACE Coalition has received $122,000 from federal funding to disperse to various groups. The funds would be used to survey students and gather data about alcohol consumption by college students and to publicize the results. There are indications that alcohol abuse among college students, while a problem, has been overblown by the media. Presidents Council gave Ms. Rosenthal permission to proceed. They suggested working closely with faculty for the BAIPS program because students could possible use this project as a capstone. Ms. Rosenthal reported that GBC was not awarded the Title III grant. Our proposal focused on our strengths rather than our weakness, which appeared to have hurt us this year. We also had to reduce the paperwork for the report by 30%. We lost most of our points on our comprehensive development plan. She would like to meet with Dr. Killpatrick, Mike McFarlane and our consultant to rethink our proposal for next year. Should we decide to apply again, we want to be politically aligned and get letters of support from our representatives. 3. Student Government Association Update Michelle Urain, Robbi Phillips, and Julie Smith provided the SGA update. There will be a student hosted forum on Friday, October 22, 2004 at 4:30 p.m. in the GBC Theater to introduce the Board of Regent candidates Dorothy Gallagher and Stan Aiazzi. They reported that soon there will be a student activity office in Griswold Hall. The student activity office will assist students groups in organizing their efforts. Michelle Urain reported that the Nevada Student Alliance will be meeting at the next Board of Regents meeting and will be discussing the cost of textbooks. Also, on their agenda will be a discussion on student government classifications and how they are paid. Robbi Phillips provided a copy of the SGA calendar of events. Of particular interest: October 23 is the pumpkin patch/petting zoo; Red Ribbon Week A Pledge to be Drug/Alcohol Free begins the week of October 25; October 28 is the costume party/kiddie carnival; November 17 is the annual turkey feed; December 1 is a free food social; and December 10 is the SGA holiday party. No concerts have been planned as of yet, as the question of insurance (TULIP policy) is still under consideration. 4. Classified Council Update Dr. Killpatrick welcomed Irma Reyes and Karen Smith as the new co-chairs for Classified Council. Irma Reyes reported that the Classified Council will be setting new goals for the remainder of this academic year. The co-chairs will meet with Classified Council within two weeks of attending Presidents Council. Ms. Reyes reported that the annual Classified Council Chili Feed will be held on October 22. The Chili Feed will have a grand prize raffle drawing for $300. The raffle will not conflict with the Foundation raffle because they are not soliciting raffle ticket sales from the public. She reported that the most pending concern of Classified Council is to clarify Erik Seastedt role as an advocate for them. They do not want Mr. Seastedt to represent Classified Council at Presidents Council meetings. 5. Strategic Planning Will discuss at the next Presidents Council meeting. 6. Travel Time Carl Diekhans reported that Faculty Senate approved the new travel time policy pertaining to the per diem. Presidents Council approved the Travel Time policy. Mr. Erik Seastedt will be responsible for updating the policy and ensuring that it is placed on the webpage. It was noted that the printed version will always be the official version of the policy. 7. Miscellaneous The GBC catalog states that Spring Break is on March 28 to April 1, 2005. Faculty Senate has voted to change the 2005 Spring Break to the last FULL week in March. All Spring Breaks in the future should always fall on the last full week in March. The Curriculum and Articulation committee has unanimously approved the BSN program. The Compensation and Benefits committee will be meeting next week to discuss the workload policy. The final report by the Committee to Evaluate Higher Education has been published. Presidents Council discussed enrollment and the effects that lower enrollments could have on the next biennium. The final enrollment count will be conducted at the end of the semester in December. We dont have a good tracking system with SIS to help breakdown the numbers and statistical information to help get a better view of where our weakness lies. Jeremy Lords will be on campus tomorrow participating in several group meetings to compile data and prepare/present a report to GBC in November. This will be very helpful to our strategy. Dr. Killpatrick stated that the Domestic Violence Ceremony to honor Naomi Menesinni last Friday went well. Member of the NNRPDP, the Elko County School District, GBC, and various elected officials were on hand to commemorate Naomi and to speak out against domestic violence.
