Faculty Senate Update Frank Daniels IAV Policies The policy has been reviewed by Bob Hannu. He had some minor changes that were approved by Faculty Senate on February 19, 2010. Cliff Ferry and Mardell Wilkins will work to put the policy into the correct format and bring back to Presidents Council for approval. Merit Raise for Tenured Teaching Faculty at the Top of the Salary Range The policy was approved by Faculty Senate on February 19, 2010. Faculty wanted to define meritorious performance. Presidents Council needed more time to review the policy. The policy will be brought back to PC for approval on April 13, 2010. 2.22 Emeritus/Emerita Status The policy was approved. There will be an exception on the due dates for this year as the due dates have already passed. The due dates allow the personnel committee time to review applications at their February meeting and then present their recommendation to Faculty Senate. Faculty Senate will send recommendation to the appropriate Vice President who will in turn forward the recommendation to the President who is the final granting authority. Classified Council Update Jolina Adams reported the system ad hoc committee that is investigating classified state employment vs NSHE employment is still gathering information. There is a general classified meeting on Friday, March 26. SGA Update Lynn Mahlberg reported the Nevada Student Alliance and the Chancellor are meeting this week to discuss the fee increases that will be discussed at the special Board of Regents meeting on April 16, 2010. SGA student life had a successful midnight basketball last week. They also hosted a go green costume party the following night. They have been keeping very busy. Other Policies for Approval 4.9 Travel The system changes on mileage was approved at the last PC meeting. There are now more changes that need to be included in the policy. We now need hotel receipts to substantiate hotel lodging expense. The meal reimbursement times were change to coincide with NSHEs policy; GBC is a little stricter with the times. The mileage reimbursement change will affect day travel. For day trips of 75 miles or less there will be no meal reimbursement. There will still be mileage reimbursement if the employee has to take their personnel vehicle. The change in meal reimbursement for day trips of 75 miles or less will affect recruiting the most. The mileage will be determined from the college to the destination city using the state mileage chart which will be posted to the GBC website. Presidents Council approved the changes. Frank Daniels will announce these changes at the next Faculty Senate meeting. Mardell Wilkins will email the policy to faculty and staff with the link to the state mileage chart. The effective date will be May 1, 2010 to give employees proper notification. Frank will mention the change during the next Faculty Senate meeting. Distinguished Alumni Award - This award was originally established as a vehicle to jump start an alumni association. Unfortunately, we dont have the staff to coordinate an alumni association. We still can recognize an outstanding alumnus. The Presidents Office will send an email to GBC faculty and staff, GBC Advisory Board, and Foundation Trustees soliciting recommendations. The deadline for recommendations will be April 10, 2010. Community Service Award - The Presidents Office is requesting nominations for the Community Service Award. The nominations are due by April 10, 2010. Evaluation for Administrators The evaluation committee will be working on the evaluation process for administrators. The evaluation process needs to be constructive and quantifiable. There is some confusion as to who is included as an administrator. In the past administrators were the president and his executive staff/direct reports. The evaluation committee should recommend what group should be included as administrators for this evaluation process. This evaluation process should lead to professional enrichment and advancement of skills like the new faculty evaluation process. Floor Covering for the Fitness Center Mike McFarlane presented samples of various protective floor coverings for the fitness center. The vinyl samples come in rolls that would be tapped down. Square carpet samples come in 40 by 80 pieces and can be laid out in customized sections that stick to the floor. Both samples would be about $10,000 to $13,000. Presidents Council recommended purchasing the carpet squares. Miscellaneous Bob Burns and Norm Goeringer will be the Honorary Baccalaureate degree recipients at this years commencement ceremony. Ashley Rose Reed has been selected for this years Regent Scholar Award. Lynn Mahlberg talked about the cultural diversity report that will be presented to the Board of Regents at the June meeting. Originally the Regents wanted student stories. Now we have heard that the focus should be on student success issues and initiatives. In other words what are the student challenges, and how do we address those challenges? Cliff Ferry is urging people to update their strategic plans. Updates are needed for every program by the end of the semester. Susanna Dorr continues to upgrade the online programs. Cliff has been working on the general education program review. He did a study on existing syllabi. Focus groups with faculty will be scheduled in the next month to talk about gen ed, and a meeting of whole group will be scheduled by the end of the semester.
