Legislative Update Paul Killpatrick reported that GBC received enhancement money for the Nye County transfer which totaled $1.5 million. Policies and Procedures Cliff Ferry Media Services Presidents Council recommended labeling each bulletin board so we know who is responsible for keeping up the bulletin boards. Large copy projects should be done in media services. Joyce Shaw and John Rice will meet to review this policy. Maybe we should start charging departments for the paper. Joyce Shaw should be invited to a PC meeting to explain the count and who pays for toner. Mexican Consulate Request - Irma Reyes reported that the Mexican Consulate is requesting the Bighorn Activities Center on July 14 for assisting approximately 200 people with the paperwork to get their passports and identification. The Mexican Consulate will have their own laptops and will need internet access and a printer. The Spanish radio station will announce the event. There were no problems last year with the event. We will have increased security. We just need to ensure they have the proper insurance on-hand. Bill Reinhard would like Irma to alert people to not have children play in the water for safety purposes. Irma is also working for KTSN Spanish radio. She wanted to report that KTSN will give her some free public service announcements, so if we want to announce anything, please let her know. NEW Leadership Experience Amber Overholser attended the National Education for Womens (NEW) Leadership Nevada in Las Vegas this June. Amber reported that NEW Leadership Nevada is a national leadership program put on by the Womens Research Institute at UNLV. It is a six-day intensive leadership program that brings together 25 college students from across the state to learn about women's leadership and civic participation from accomplished women leaders. Students meet informally with these leaders through a series of panels, lectures, and interactive workshops and create lasting networks and mentoring relationships. Julie Smith reported that GBC has been involved with NEW Leadership for about six years. The GBC alumni from NEW Leadership is unmatched. Amber is a fine example of potential future leaders that we have at the college. Patty Jones is a GBC alumna of the program and this year was a Faculty in Residence. She led a panel discussion on women in education. The program instills a sense of urgency for action. Approximately twenty women from GBC have graduated from the program. Julie Smith is also on the Board of Directors. The program was awarded $400,000 from the legislature. Julie would really like to see an alumni program in Elko. Elko County Social Impact Assessment John Rice introduced Mariah Evans and Carol Bishop from the University of Nevada, Reno. They are conducting a survey to provide data on the social and demographic aspect of life in Elko County with special reference to Elko County cultural heritages. The data gathered and presented in the report will be available for many Elko County planning purposes, such as County input to social impact statements, revision of county open space plans, etc. Data gathered for this project will ultimately focus on a survey, but will also involve assembling pre-existing data from prior surveys, census and agency data, and the use of unobtrusive measures. The researchers will ensure that an appropriate range of issues are covered by consulting Elko County residents on the topics that matter to them in considering their ways of life, their preferred work and leisure patterns, and the importance (or not) of Elko County heritages to their identity and culture. Cliff asked if they were going to look at the transient population, and yes the transient population will be a sample. Paul said the college would be willing to give them contact information on different groups. This report is for the Elko County Commissioners. Accreditation Update Mike McFarlane has been working on the action plans. Please send your updated action plans to Cliff Ferry. PC discussed how they want the action plans to be presented. Miscellaneous Paul attended the Gabbs High School graduation. They had nine students graduating. There are fifty-one students total from K-12. Paul presented GBC scholarships. One of the community members attending the graduation purchased six one-hundred dollar bookstore certificates for the graduates. Paul said it was a good experience to attend. He wanted to extend his appreciation to the recruitment department without their efforts we would not have had 66% of the graduating class attending GBC. John Rice reported that Joyce Shaw has put together a draft of new brochure that he will bring to the next PC meeting. The foundations executive committee will meet on Friday to officially accept the 2.3 million dollar bequest from the Leonards. Carl Diekhans reported that work continues on relocating the modular units from Turquoise Ridge. Berg Hall Conference Room remodel is almost complete. We will have the room dedication soon. The budget for this next fiscal year is fixed at $18, 706,000. Bill Reinhard reported that B&G is treating the moss in the creek. We are hoping to get a card lock system in place in the near future. Bill reported that he will be working with Cliff Ferry to complete the review of the Human Resources policy manual. Bill is also working with John Rice on the lease of the 200 acres in Pahrump. Mike McFarlane reported that we should be concerned about enrollments - every GBC site is down and the internet courses are not taking up the slack. It is better to take action sooner rather than later. John Rice said he is getting some estimates to restart The College News this year to send out to the entire service area. Ed Nickel reported that the goal of faculty is to have the BAS-IT program offered totally online. This would allow us to reach those students throughout the state that already have an AAS. Cliff Ferry reported that the Board of Education closed another charter school. The school was a distance education school called Team A.
