Japan Trip Tammy Staley reported to Presidents Council on her recent trip to Japan. She was hosted by the Rotary GSE program and was in Japan for one month. She went with four other professionals (teammates) from our region. They went on approximately sixty excursions, twenty rotary meetings, five vocational visits (educational system), had numerous cultural experiences, and many company tours. Here is a list of some of the places that she visited: Chukyo Senior High, Gifu Pharmaceutical University, Gifu University, Gifu Womens University, Tokai Womens College, the Cultural Academy, and the Japan Softopia. The Japan Softopia encourages information technology; it has 100 incubation rooms, helps with business plans, financing, and is affiliated with Utah, USC, Silicon Valley, Smart Valley, and West Virginia. Tammy shared GBC information and brochures. She feels that international recruitment to Japan would require adjustments on GBCs part. The number one reason for the Japanese to come to the United States is to improve their English. They would do well with reading textbooks and writing papers but would have difficulties with understanding lectures; their conversational English needs improvement. GBC could take the ESL program and package it somehow to the Japanese. We would have to market the recruitment as a true cultural experience. Classified Council Update June Braaten reported that Classified Council had a meeting on December 2, 2005 and voted to support the Secret Santa to support families and single students in the residence halls who are staying here for the Christmas break. They will be purchasing ten $15 gift cards for the fundraiser. Classified Council also voted to support the Foundations dinner dance by donating a gift basket. They will be supporting the midnight breakfast on December 13, 2005. June reported that for Thanksgiving, Classified Council donated two trunk-loads of groceries to the CADV (over $400 worth of items). GBC Relay for Life team received a thank-you letter from the American Cancer Society. SGA Update No report. Pahrump Discussion Paul Killpatrick held a Chat with the President session yesterday continuing with the Pahrump discussion. He reported that the decision has been deferred to the January Board of Regents meeting. The main concern is splitting up Nye County. CCSN and GBC both want the ability to offer services because of the contracted training opportunities. Linda Uhlenkott talked to CCSNs faculty senate chair, and they are in favor of keeping the test site area. Miscellaneous Carol Ford presented reasons why the Child Center follows the school district calendar. The Child Center covers six weeks more when it follows the School District Calendar. Eighty percent of the children have older siblings in the school district. We bring in more revenue because we are open longer. We will have to take a look at Fair Day next year to see how many children are affected and whether they have it off. Presidents Council discussed safety concerns during the holidays and some tips to avoid dangerous situations. Carl Diekhans reported that the universal Classified Grant-in-Aid plan was not approved the NSHE presidents. Carl says our policy is okay as it is, but we need to further define some of the terms and work out how we are going to address this policy. What qualifies as a work related class and what is not? Some supervisors let people off to take a class and some do not. We need to form a Classified Grant-in-Aid committee to look at all of this and to look at flex schedules as well. Carl Diekhans reported that he will talk to Classified Council about how the comp time is compiled for the Winter Break. Linda Uhlenkott reported that she received a letter from the Chancellors office inquiring when a good time would be for the Chancellor to come to campus to visit with faculty. Danny Gonzales requested PC to review a draft calendar for in-service. He needs an idea of how much time to allot for scheduling maybe day. Discussed the possibility of having a progressive lunch.
