A corollary function is to provide material for general informational uses, such as recreational, cultural and non-academic interests. Also, in response to the strong service mission of GBC in the community at large, the library makes its resources available to the residents of the local and state communities. The major goals of the library are to: Provide students with a conceptual framework of the organization of knowledge and with the searching skills necessary for them to become independent learners and thinkers. Provide a carefully developed collection of relevant, up-to-date quality materials to support students endeavors. Use technology to provide access to remote information, which increases the amount and enhances the quality of materials available to users. Provide a facility suitable for study and research. Cooperate with other libraries and library networks to make a wide range of materials available to users. Procedures 1.0 General Procedures 1.1 Borrowing Privileges. All residents of the State of Nevada may use the materials in the library. Community borrower cards are issued to high school students 16 years of age and older, and adults in the GBC service area. Community borrowers are limited to five items circulated at any one time. Under normal circulation situations, faculty, staff, and students are not limited to the number of items which they may borrow. Library privileges may be pulled or denied to any person because of habitual abuse long over- due materials, lost materials, or non-payment of assessed fees, such as replacement costs for a lost book. 1.2 Interlibrary Loan Services. The library has cooperative borrowing agreements with other academic and public libraries in Nevada. Staff at the library will be happy to request materials from other libraries for the students, faculty, and staff of the college. Materials may be located by using on-line catalogs or on-line computer information searches. The library asks that similar materials owned by GBC be explored before requesting that items be borrowed from another library. Please allow one to two weeks for borrowed items to arrive. All direct costs incurred by GBC to borrow materials will be passed on to the patron requesting the materials. Many out-of-state libraries require a minimum charge for processing any request. 1.3 Reserve Materials. An instructor may place materials on a limited circulation status by placing them on the reserve section of the circulation area. Reserve service allows an item to be used by a large number of students in a limited amount of time. Reserve materials may be books, audio-visual materials such as video tapes or instructor-owned books. The instructor determines the loan period which may be (1) in library use only; (2) overnight circulation; (3) three day circulation; and (4) seven day circulation. Instructors give the materials to be placed on reserve to the circulation supervisor. The library also needs to know the course number and title for which the materials are to be used. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to take materials off reserve and pick up their personal copies. Materials not removed by the end of the semester will be removed by the library staff and returned to the shelves. Materials to be used from semester-to-semester must be placed on reserve each semester. 1.4 Classes. The Library will conduct classes to acquaint students with the computerized book catalog, databases, and government documents. Classes and information will be tailored to the requesting group. Classes must be scheduled in advance with a reference librarian. Small group classes may also be scheduled for classroom reference projects and for detailed instruction on the use of specific materials in the Library. 1.5 Acquisitions. Materials are purchased based on faculty requests, reviews in library acquisition subscription tools, and availability of materials to all students of ɫ. The librarys collection is on an online catalog, along with the collections of the University of Nevada, Reno, Western Nevada Community College, and the Desert Research Institute. The selections of all library materials are made in accord with American Library Associations Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to View statements. 1.6 Distance Education. In response to GBCs emphasis on distance education and the large service area, the Library spends a great deal of its materials budget on electronic products. These products enable all of our students, regardless of location, to have access to the same information. Print materials are also purchased, and these materials, when requested by students, are sent as soon as possible. Library web pages have been set up to make distant students library use as convenient as possible, whether requesting a library card, requesting interlibrary loan materials or asking for help from a librarian. Librarians also travel to branch campuses at least once per semester to offer in-person assistance. 2.0 Library Video-Conferencing Capabilities ɫ has the equipment to receive video-conferences via satellite. Although ɫ does not now have monthly subscriptions telling of available conferences, members of the college community will typically receive a brochure in the mail from an outside organization, such as AACJC or the like, announcing the conference and quoting a fee to be paid in order to get the satellite information. Most of the conferences are legitimate, but some are not. Care should be taken in choosing a conference. The price can range from several hundred dollars to several thousand. There may also be a room charge. Scheduling. The following are the steps for arranging a video conference: Complete a formal room request to confirm use of the room. On the request, note that the satellite dish is needed. Reserve or make payment to the organization sponsoring the conference using standard controller's office procedures. The organization sponsoring the video-conference will send you appropriate satellite names and transponder numbers. Forward that information to the library as soon as possible, so they may have the equipment set up for you when the program starts. 3.0 Depositories 3.1 Records Depository. A section of the library is designated as a records repository to hold official records of ɫ. The repository includes, but is not limited to the following: NSHE reports, policies, and procedures, board of regents agendas, minutes, official minutes of board of regents standing committees Student government association (SGA) Academic master plans Official publications, including catalogs and newsletters GBC handbooks Accreditation reports Professional magazines and journals 3.2 Space Limitations for Records Depositor. The library will not keep paper copies of material available via the Internet, nor will the library accept filing cabinets of material. Only binders will be accepted; filing cabinets and other storage formats will be kept by the individual departments. 3.3 Federal Depository The GBC Library is a federal depository library. The library receives approximately 20% of what the federal government publishes. The library receives, pamphlets, CDs, DVDs and videotapes. Anything patrons wish to access which is not available at the GBC Library can be borrowed from the University of Nevada, Reno, which receives everything the government publishes.
